Invitation

The 12th International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants (ISVDOP 12)

Under the auspices of the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS)

April 20-24, 2008

Hotel Van der Valk, Haarlem, the Netherlands

Flowers have always been an integrated part of Dutch culture as visible in f.i. many Dutch paintings and in the tradition to give a bunch of flowers at anniversaries. For centuries the cultivation of ornamentals has been of great economic importance for the Dutch economy. Therefore the organizing committee of the 12th International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants (ISVDOP 12) is happy to invite you to the Netherlands. This will be an excellent opportunity to see the cultivation of various ornamentals and to experience its splendour and importance.

ISVDOP 12 will be held in the historical city of Haarlem, the cradle of Dutch tulip cultivation. The symposium accommodation is situated in the middle of important horticultural regions yielding pot plants and cut flowers under glass, flower bulb crops, perennials and shrubs. Within a radius of 35 km: world’s largest flower auction in Aalsmeer, Amsterdam international airport “Schiphol” and historical cities as Amsterdam and Leiden.

The week of April 20 has been chosen for ISVDOP 12 as being optimal for sightseeing the flower bulb fields in bloom.

Viruses are a continuous threat for ornamental industry. Because most of these crops are propagated vegetative, multiple infections are not exceptional. Unexpected virus infections may result from cultivation of ornamental crops in new areas, changed cultural practices, intensified (intercontinental) trade and reduced use of pesticides. These changes urge to improve certification schemes, detection methods, resistance breeding and integrated vector and virus management. With your help the organizing committee expects to cover all these aspects in an interesting program.

Besides the traditional technical excursion, the symposium program will be completed by a visit to the famous flower bulb exhibition “Keukenhof” in Lisse.

There will be no partners program. However, many links are included under “Venue” offering you and your partner the opportunity to compose your own tourist program. During the symposium (actual) tourist information and suggestions for daily trips can be gathered at the registration desk.

On the Saturday following the symposium (April 26) the magnificent flower bulb parade will pass the flower bulb district between Noordwijk and Haarlem.

Scientists, industrialists, growers, plant health officers and students are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting. The official language of this symposium will be English.

The organizers of ISVDOP 12 anticipate an attendance of many delegates from various countries, please register as soon as possible. Registration is open now! Please note the deadlines for abstract submission, registration and hotel booking.
